Joshua Tree National Park

We started today by waking up at Sawtooth Canyon, in a free BLM campground about 12 miles south of Barstow, CA. We hiked up onto the rocks overlooking the campground and saw some nice views from up there before breaking camp and heading for Joshua Tree National Park.

We figured we would be spending 2 nights at Joshua Tree, finally having a day to relax and not need to drive anywhere. But we figured wrong – all the campsites were full before we even got there. At the visitor center we were told they all filled up yesterday.

But it was 1:30 and we were hungry so we went into the park and found a nice place to eat, and then had a quick drive-by tour of the park (which was not nearly enough to see much of it). We did a quick hike at Hidden Valley hiking trail, and already the sun was getting low in the sky. The park is only open from sunrise to sunset, and this being November, sunset is at  4:38 p.m. so we had to move fast.

So yeah it was quick and we didn’t see as much as we’d have liked. But what we did see was gorgeous. Here are some of our favorite photos from today:
