Interior Walls Installation

We’ve had a few questions on how we put up our walls inside the van, so here’s a quick run down on what we did.

We even have some video, (below) and although it’s not as complete as we would like, it sort of gets the point across.

Basically what we did is used furring strips attached to the van, and cedar tongue and groove paneling attached to the furring strips.

We made the furring strips out of 1/2″ AC plywood, cut into 3″ wide and 2″ wide strips. 3″ for the walls, and 2″ for the ceiling. Using 1-1/4″ self-tapping sheet metal screws, we screwed the furring strips to the van at roughly 3-foot intervals, keeping them as parallel with each other as possible.

The paneling is 1/4″ x 4″ Tongue and Groove cedar, and using 1″ black, self-tapping wood screws, we attached the cedar to the furring strips. We also came up with a creative way to make a home made “trim ring” around the window, (see other video below).

We wish we could have made a more complete, start-to-finish video, but Shannon had already accepted a gig in Arizona by the time we got to putting up the cedar, and we had a lot left to build in the van in a very short time. And shooting a step-by-step video of a project takes about 3 times longer than just doing the project itself. But hopefully what we put together here helps illustrate how we did it.

  1. Thanks so much for showing how you used your furring strips to hold window trim frames in place. I’ve been pondering how to do this and you have accomplished it brilliantly. Your electrical area is shown from the side in the image at the top of this post and a partial front view shows at the top of the ‘van build’ page. Any way you could post a full front view of this area? It looks very organized and I am about to embark on this task.

All the best in your travels. We also have a special fondness for Iowa City – got the one of the best ‘flat white’ coffee during our cross-country trip last year.

    1. Hi Diedre, so glad you found it helpful! Sure I can get you a front view photo of the electrical system. Might email it to you or find somewhere to post it on the blog. And wow – small world! Yeah Iowa City has a special place in our hearts too. Thanks for the comment!

  2. I also would love to see that full frontal view of your electrical system! I’m looking to convert a 2020 when spring arrives here in Minnesota, and in the meantime am collecting materials and ideas. I’ll be following your lead on making my subfloor. Much thanks for your creativity and sharing!
