County Road 12

When Google maps directions gives you several options, with the blue route being the fastest, you may want to consider one of the slower grey routes if you have time.

On our way to Crested Butte this morning, we figured we could re-work our itinerary a bit to accommodate the grey route that said “4 minutes longer”.

Turning off of a nearly deserted, State Route 133 onto County Road 12, we found a road that seemed in need of repair and very quickly came upon a sign saying “Pavement Ends”, just about the time that the friendly Google Maps directions voice said “…continue on County Road 12 for 31 miles…”

Our jaws dropped…

Really? 31 miles on this washboard-ridden gravel road?

Fighting the urge to turn back, we continued on instead, figuring we would be hypocrites if we turned around (based on our backroads post from a few days ago).

And good thing we pressed on. We were treated to some of the most beautiful scenery so far on this road trip. Again, photos can’t do it justice, but the fall colors were gorgeous. See for yourself:
